Something is Better than Nothing

You might be familiar with the phrase “Something is better than Nothing?”

The idea of settling for “better than nothing” used to make me feel like a big ole’ failure. To me, it was just another sign of weakness, and I have a tendency to want quick results….like, NOW!

But lately, I’ve been changing my tune. Letting go of perfection has created more forward movement in my life than I ever thought possible..but I had to really change my thought process.

Break the “All or Nothing” mentality

I’m the first to guiltily raise my hand when it comes to having an “All or Nothing” attitude. 

You know…if you can’t do it all, or get results right now, then you may as well quit. Or better yet, wait for a better time (my personal favorite)…because somewhere in my brain I assume that the perfect day with zero interruptions and distractions will magically show up in my life and I’ll know exactly what to do with it… 

Ha! I’m a mom…that day will never happen.

You have to find ways to navigate short term progress toward your larger goals or you’ll always be left feeling like a failure. But something is better than nothing….

Today is the perfect example.

It has been the Mondayest Monday of all the Mondays! 

Last night I was ready to take on this week like nobody’s business. I was fired up to get my workout in and then attack the “to do” list as if my life depended on it. 

 Then this morning hit and the universe started laughing at me…

I immediately felt like I was coming down with something, so finding the energy to get through my workout was a struggle (to say the least), but since I was teaching a class, I gulped down some pre-workout and soldiered on. But of course, that wasn’t the end of it….

Everything that could go wrong, did…from my laptop malfunctioning and losing hours worth of work, to constant distractions and interruptions…and once again, I felt like I was spinning my wheels and going nowhere fast. Do you have days like this?

I really wanted to just crawl under a blanket with my remote and some hot tea and give up on the whole dang day!

I took a deep breath, stepped back, looked at my list and asked myself one question….

What could I accomplish today that would be better than nothing?

This is it right here. I could write this article. And if that is all I get done today, it will be Better Than Nothing!

And I’ll call it a win.

Did I accomplish ALL the things I wanted to today? Nope. Not even close. But can I check something off my list? Can I say that I put in my best effort given the circumstances? You bet!

We apply this same concept to our Live Diet Free program and the funny thing is, I wasn’t always willing to apply it in the other areas of my life…

We call it a One-up strategy. By simply one-upping yourself everyday or every week, you can celebrate the small wins that set in motion long-term habits. But you have to break that “All or Nothing” mentality.

I recently did a challenge with Natalie Hodson called “Find your Compass” and found that she was teaching a similar concept called “Good, Better, Best”. Last week I did a “better than nothing” workout on Facebook Live by literally writing down 5 simple movements that I could repeat two times, real quick, before I had to jump in the shower and head out the door.

Was it perfect? No. But it was better than nothing! 

And if your reading this and haven’t done your workout today…I’m giving you  permission to do your own better than nothing workout.

Here you go. Do this sequence 2 times and call it good for the day. 

Believe me, when it comes to fitness….

Something is always better than nothing…even if that something is only 5 or 10 minutes. You can check it off your list and move on with your day. 

When it comes to your nutrition…

If you can’t have a salad, rather than stuffing yourself with a full-size-all-the-fixins’ burger with a large fry and coke on the side…find an alternative within your given situation.

Maybe a burger place is the only food within miles and your screaming toddler in the backseat has you on the brink of insanity anyway. Okay then, a lettuce-wrapped burger and small fry would still be a fat-burning meal. You can release the guilt of not eating a perfectly healthy meal, enjoy the pleasure of a yummy french fry and keep your kiddo from getting hangrier in the back seat…without feeling guilty and gross later. 

Again, it may not the perfect choice, but that’s OKAY because something is better than nothing. Do you see what I’m getting at here?

Give yourself some grace and take every small win along the way.
