Have you ever been running or hiking in a new place, where the trail is uneven and covered with rocks, boulders and tree roots?
In order to move quickly or efficiently you must keep a close eye on the ground in front of you so you don’t trip or fall.
It’s easy to become so focused on keeping a sure footing that a mile or two might go by before finally taking a moment to rest. At this point you lift your eyes upward and see the breathtaking scenery surrounding you, and you realize that you’ve been missing it because your eyes were only focused downward at your feet. And while it’s important to be aware of your steps, sometimes you can get “stuck” in this narrow viewpoint.
Life can mirror this experience. It’s easy to get stuck in a negative mindset, focusing on the day to day struggles, worrying about potential risks or problems. Sometimes we become so stuck that even when there are opportunities to look up and enjoy the world around us, we feel inclined to keep our eyes on the floor. Beauty and joy are overshadowed by the anxiety and fear of what lies ahead.
Several months ago my sisters, mom, and I found ourselves in this very state, perpetually looking downward, focusing on the problems (there seemed to be an abundance of them!). It felt like we were going through the motions of life, with fear and worry overshadowing the joyful moments. Thankfully we had each other, a sisterhood that has gotten us through our darkest moments, many tears, and eventually led us to the realization that we don’t have to be “stuck” here.
The real problem was not with our circumstances, but with our mindset. One of my favorite quotes by Russell M. Nelson states, “The joy we feel has little to do with the circumstance in our lives, and everything to do with the focus of our lives.”
So began our individual journeys toward self discovery. We started sharing an audio book account and began consuming self development books like they were a plate full of fudge mint brownies. 😉 And while each of us has had our own “Ah-ha” moments, glimpses of clarity, serious confidence boosts and immense feelings of joy, it has been the process of sharing it with each other that has made the experience truly powerful. We’ve decided it’s time to expand our sisterhood and share our journey with you.
